Brighten up your look with a pair of eye-catching red slippers from glerups. Our slippers are made with a fine wool blend to ensure your comfort while wearing them. Read on to learn more about why glerups slippers are among the best footwear for leisure time on the market.
Danish cosiness at its’ finest
Although Denmark is a small country, we take pride in an expression that only exists in the Danish language and can’t be directly translated into other languages. The word is “hygge” and the closest word in English that resembles it is “cosiness”, yet it doesn’t fully cover it. “Hygge” is called a part of the Danish mentality, we like to “hygge” as much as we can, wherever we are. It can be anything from sharing a cup of coffee with a good friend, going for a walk alone or with a loved one, playing games inside with the family on a rainy day or even surprising your coworkers with homemade baked goods on a long day at work. Basically, anything can be “hygge” with the right mindset. It is all about enjoying yourself whatever you do.
With a pair of glerups slippers, you are well on your way to experience “hygge”, whether you are Danish or not. These slippers are made with the best materials to ensure you the best feeling for your feet, no matter the outer circumstances.
A wool blend like no other
The wool used for our slippers is quite unique. We have refined this wool mix of wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand to the perfect blend that ensures the wearer of our footwear a special and comfy experience no matter the circumstances. The fibres of the blend have the benefit of keeping the heat away from your feet, when it’s warm, but keeping your feet warm, when it’s cold. The wool locks in both humidity and odour, so your feet stay fresh – and all you have to do to keep the slippers fresh is to let them stay outside in the fresh air once in a while. This also fits into our philosophy of making footwear that lasts more than a season. A pair of glerups will not need replacement for a good while, if you make a small effort to maintain them – for more on how to do so, read here.
Another benefit from our wool blend is the molecular structure of the fibres, as it resembles the structure of human skin, which helps your feet stay healthy and avoid irritation of the skin, which can occur when wearing slippers made of other materials.
Red slippers inspired by Nordic tradition
At glerups, we usually say that the colours of our footwear is inspired by the nordic nature. While red isn’t the most common colour in nordic nature, the light in Scandinavia during fall has a hue of red, as all of nature prepares for the cold of winter. Especially as the days get shorter and the sunset falls earlier, everything is illuminated with a red glow. Red also leads the thoughts to winter holidays and celebrations, but most importantly red represents love. In our case, it is both the love for nature, animals and people, but also a pivotal part of how glerups was started in the first place.
You see, Nanny Glerup, who became the founder of glerups, wanted to surprise her husband Ove, with a gift made with love. A gift he could use everyday, which would simultaneously remind him of her love for him. So she took a class in felting and soon after, presented Ove with a pair of wool slippers that she had made with her own hands. Ove was both touched and excited about his new slippers and he practically wore them where ever he went. Friends and family soon made requests for Nanny to make slippers for them as well and after a while, Ove thought it wise for them to invest in a farm, where there would be space enough for Nanny to have a workshop, as well as room for a handful of sheep of their own, so they would be self sufficient in providing wool for the slippers. The interest in the slippers grew, and soon Nanny went to conferences with other designers, displaying her slippers and networking. At this point, Nanny could produce up to two pairs of slippers a day. But as the word of the felted slippers from Northern Jutland grew, so did the demand and Nanny and Ove had to expand the business.
Today, the farm which Ove purchased is the headquarters of glerups in Denmark. Our fan base comes from all over the world and the design is the same as when Nanny made the first pair of slippers. The quality and craftsmanship is an indisputable part of glerups and we adhere to the tradition of making footwear with a respect for nature, animals and people alike.
Red for the holidays
The colour red is also a festive colour and this is why we think our red slippers are perfect for the winter season with the different holidays it brings along. Red resembles the warmth we yearn for in the cold months, but also the warmth we feel, when we gather inside with family and friends to enjoy each other's company. Our red slippers are the perfect gift for someone you care about and want to spoil. Maybe you want to encourage a coworker, a friend or significant other with a pair of comfy, red slippers? Or let the kids in the family play Santa’s little helpers with the slippers to match? Or you could also just give a little spark to your winter wardrobe with a colour pop by adding red slippers to it. There are many possibilities and occasions for gift giving during the winter season, so why not let it be a gift that can be appreciated every time it’s worn? Can you imagine the level of excitement, if everyone in your family unwraps a pair of red glerups slippers for the holidays?
