Traditional craftsmanship makes all the difference
While glerups footwear isn’t decorated with portraits of action figures, cute animals or fairytale princesses, the big difference between glerups slippers and other types of slippers is that our footwear is made with comfort in mind as the top priority. This is ensured by making them while adhering to the traditional craftsmanship that was used to create the first pair of slippers from glerups.
Classic, minimalistic design
Originating in Denmark, glerups have always been influenced by Scandinavian design tradition. Keeping things simple, functional and aesthetically pleasing, while the main focus is on the raw materials being used for creating. We feel that our footwear fits perfectly in this line of thinking. The footwear is simple in both design and expression, without a lot of unnecessary accessories or decorations. The material is really allowed to shine through and with the many beneficial properties, no extra visual effects are needed.
Durability is also a key component for us and our footwear isn’t meant to last just a single season. Providing they are well taken care of – and your child doesn’t have a growth spurt every week – they can last longer than most ordinary slippers. They are so simple to maintain that you can actually teach your kids how to do it themselves. The guidelines for maintaining your glerups footwear is found here.
How glerups began
The story of glerups almost reads like a fairytale. Around 30 years ago, in a little town in the Northern part of Denmark, founder Nanny Glerup had an idea. She had just started taking a class in making things in felt and wanted her first product to be something for her dear husband, Ove. She wanted it to be something practical, something he could use everyday. So she decided on making him a pair of woolen slippers, which she imagined he would wear around the house in the evening, when they both would unwind in front of the tv with a cup of coffee.
Ove was both touched and happy about this gift and he enjoyed wearing his new slippers. So much in fact that soon he was wearing them all day, everywhere he went. This drew some attention and Ove used every chance he got to boast about his wife's newfound skill. Soon, friends, family and neighbours were also getting interested in owning a pair of Nanny’s homemade footwear. Meanwhile, Ove and Nanny invested in a small farm, where they could have a few Gotland sheep of their own, making them able to produce their own wool and not be dependent on others to provide material, and Nanny could have a workshop of her own.
Nanny started to attend smaller gatherings and fairs with other amateur designers and craftsmen and the word about the comfy woolen footwear soon spread throughout the country of Denmark. Nanny strived to keep up with the growing demand for slippers, but when a Swedish company placed an order for 200 pairs of slippers for kids, she had to face the fact that she would not be able to make that many pairs on her own. Much to her dismay, she had to turn down the order and was now at a crossroads. She either had to readjust the amount of orders she could make, or take the step of making a real business out of what started as a hobby.
Luckily for many people and their feet around the world, Nanny showed her true viking spirit and chose the latter. Making glerups the official name was just the beginning. Then came the extra workers, which in the beginning were recruited from Nanny’s own family. Nanny and Ove turned the farm into a factory and today glerups use it as headquarters in Denmark. The production has been moved to our factory in Romania. A production site that Ove and Nanny have built from scratch. But the philosophy of glerups hasn’t changed, although a lot of other things have changed over the years. glerups are still made with respect for people, animals and nature, and it will continue to be done this way in the future.
From farm to foot
glerups slippers are made from the finest wool mix, made of a combination of Danish wool from Gotland sheep and high quality wool from New Zealand. This gives a unique result, which is characterized by its softness and breathability, making sure your kids will feel great comfortability every time they slip their feet into a pair of glerups slippers.
This applies in both winter as well as summer and everyday in between. This is due to the wool itself being temperature regulating by letting excess heat and moisture out through the natural fibers, so the kids will feel warm and comfy even when it's cold - but they can also be worn during summer, where the wool will lead the heat away from the skin and into the fibers. Speaking of the fibers, these have a molecular structure that resembles that of human skin, meaning that your kids are less likely to experience skin irritation, even when wearing the slippers on bare feet for an extended period of time.

A selection of colors to suit every kid
Slippers from glerups are unisex and come in a variety of colors that reflect our love for nature and the organic materials used in the process of making the slippers. While we can’t guarantee that we have footwear in your kids’ favorite color at the moment, we urge you to keep an eye on our collections, as we add new colors once in a while. The inspiration for the colors are found in the Nordic nature, which changes as the seasons pass and this invites us to expand our color palette continuously.
Kids will be kids
If you have any experience with children in general, you know that their pace can be quite breathtaking at times. When they are playing and really get into it, the world around them tends to disappear and they are fully enveloped in whatever adventure they have made up. With glerups slippers, your kids won’t just be comfortable while fighting dragons or chasing monsters – due to the firm grip on the feet, your children are less likely to trip while running around in them. Furthermore, the great fit of the shoe can also have beneficial effects on your child's posture, while the warmth of the wool helps in the combat against typical children’s ailments, especially during the winter season, as keeping the feet warm during winter is one of the first steps in staying healthy when it’s cold.
Not sure of the size? We got you!
